Where does the name discus come from?

Theses types of fish have been given the name ‘discus’ purely from their fascinating shape of their bodies. Which gives the allusion they have been compressed to a flat round shape from them, with very small fins. They are one of the species in the fresh water ‘cichlid’ family.

There colourings can be a multitude of colours on only one fish. Ranging from bold blues, greens, yellows and reds to a simple creamy white colour with black spots.

Some can have horizontal, vertical or diagonal stripes on there bodies. This is what makes them all very appealing to the human eye. Which explains why they are a very popular fish to choose for you aquarium.

The other high unique point of them being a popular tropical fish is the way they glide and swirl through the water. They are one of the few fish that even eat out of your hand. It’s no wonder people love the discus fish as they seem to be more social and interactive than many other types of fish.

An adult discus once fully grown will grow to a height and length of around 20 – 25cm (8 – 10 inches) so really a fairly big size fish.

Many people seem to be quite cautious and wary of owning discus and tell that no beginners should try and have them on their own fish tank at home without being an experienced tropical fish owner. This is not true just as long as you know the key points to look after them.
